Are You TOO Fat for Your Doctor?

By Amin Motin It’s quite possible that your health care providers think you are. Right now, in the UK, you may already be targeted for refusal of health care if you’re overweight. It’s a fact that unless you lose weight, in some areas you will be denied operations like joint replacement. Being overweight is almost treated like a self-inflicted disease. Nearly 10% of health care authorities have a policy of refusing joint replacement surgery if you’re obese. Just in case you’re wondering, the medical definition of obese is anyone who is 20% over the ‘ideal’ body weight. And since it’s estimated that 22% of us are currently obese the problem affects millions. So what can you do about the problem? Well, it seems that you can’t just demand the operation because you may well face a fairly firm policy of refusal, depending on where you live. And the current justification seems to be that if you’re obese then there are greater risks in surgery. While that’s true, it does appear that the primary reason for the policy is to save money. The health care trusts involved all appear to be in debt, so it’s easy to see that they might be looking for savings somewhere. Hard as it may be, about the only way to tackle the problem and qualify for the surgery is to lose weight so that you’re no longer obese. Or you could try to get treatment outside your own area. At a time when over 30,000 people in the UK die from obesity related causes, the refusal of joint replacement surgery seems a little callous. But when you think that something like 7.5 billion pounds is spent overall on obesity related health treatment every year in the UK, it’s easy to understand why health care managers are looking to cut that cost down. That doesn’t help you or a loved one if you need the surgery, but it should certainly give pause for thought. Being very fat, obese in fact, has been linked to so many different health problems like heart disease, diabetes, stroke and even arthritis. Now it’s linked to not getting joint replacement surgery. The recommendation from every health professional is still the same: lose weight and your health will benefit as a result. You might even qualify for the surgery if you need it. If you are overweight and you do need to lose weight there’s a fair chance that you’ve tried dieting in the past, most likely with poor results. With the new policy on surgery for overweight people it’s even more important than ever to lose the weight. Just be sure to do so safely, because dieting, especially yo-yo dieting, has now been shown to be damaging to your health. A sensible, sustained weight loss is far more effective and a whole lot safer than crash weight loss from faddy diets. Who hasn’t heard of the cabbage soup diet for example? It may be okay for a few days, but how do you sustain weight loss when you come off it? For the record, the health care trusts apparently operating the policy are North Staffs., Stoke, Lincolnshire, Nth. Lincolnshire, Milton Keynes, Hereford, Hertfordshire and Suffolk. If you live in one of the areas covered by those Trusts it might be wise to start looking for ways to lose weight safely. ———————————————– Amin Motin has been involved in self-help technologies for over 15 years. Get Healthy-Eat More Fat-Well, Maybe Just Certain Types Of Fats Anyway

By Denice Moffat Did you know that your brain is composed of more than 60% fat? If you dont have the proper fats to nourish the nerve cells and myelin of the brain you will have some problems down the road (like Alzheimers disease). There are two different kinds of fatsbad fats, and good fats. Examples of bad fats include meat fats, processed fats, trans-fats, hydrogenated fats and fats processed under high heat. Good fats are unsaturated and in fluid form at room temperature and are what you should be ingesting as your fat calories. Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) Deficiencies are becoming epidemic in our world. Some similarities exist between sluggish thyroid and EFA deficiency, and low thyroid, but there are differences, too: Do YOU suffer from a fat deficiency? EFA deficiency is associated with: Chronic diarrhea, Crohns or IBS Attention deficit disorder (ADD) Irritability or nervousness Dry mouth or dry throat Skin dryness or cracks behind the ears Emphysema, asthma or other chronic lung disease Chronic joint pain or arthritis History of kidney, bladder or prostate problems Infertility, impotence or a history of repeated miscarriages Essential fatty acids (EFA’s) are those fats that the body cannot produce on its own. The body gets these fatty acids directly from the diet. For example: LA (Linoleic acid) is an omega-6 fatty acid found in sunflower, safflower, corn and sesame. These fats are used in a large array of body functions. ALA (Alpha-linolenic acid) is an omega-3 fatty acid found in flax, walnut and green leafy vegetables. These fats are used in a large array of body functions. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), comes from fish oil, chicken and eggs and is found in the brain. GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) comes from the Evening Primrose or Borage plants and has been used with some success in treating schizophrenia. There are other EFAs but this sounds complicated already. Just know that we need all of these fatty acids, and they need to be in specific ratios to work perfectly. It seems like each body needs a little different ratio, but that is what being an individual is all about. We each are attracted to different diets and different foods. The goal has been to find the ratio that works in general for the normal body and how to tweak this ratio for dis-eased body types as well. The most common unsaturated fats that I see most people needing in my own practice are Udos Choice Oil Blend, Wheat Germ Oil (especially for reproductive challenges), Olive Oil, Sunflower Oil (especially in the winter months for mild depression), and the lighter oils like Sesame, Apricot, Avocado and Emu oil for use as an after shower body lotion. My question, of course, is Whos normal? I dont know anyone that is the same as anyone else. Even identical twins have differences. There have also been a lot of studies done on EFAs over the last several years in the veterinary field as the food companies keep trying to develop diets that are optimally balanced to conquer all the chronic skin disease caused by fleas (those pesky annoying little creatures). From EFAs, our bodies make the brain fats and vital messengers that help regulate a huge abound of body activity necessary for peak function. Fatty acids can be saturated or unsaturated, but EFAs are always unsaturated. EFAs can be damaged by free radicals (like in well-done and char-broiled meats, oxygen damage and electromagnetic field influences,) and be out competed for receptor sites by saturated fats (from eating too much meat) and trans-fatty acids (from whipped vegetable oils such as margarine). Therefore, it is a good deal to include some EFAs with every meal for ultimate health so at least they have a chance to glom onto those receptor sites to make the cells work at maximum capacity for all that they need to do. The Zone Diet developed by Dr. Barry Sears goes into this in depth and his books have a lot of great recipesespecially for those people with diabetes, hypoglycemia, heart disease and obesity. The bottom line? Eat your raw vegetables, nuts and dont forget the eggs. Use butter instead of margarine. Fry only in butter, coconut, ghee or olive oil as these fats are not that easily damaged by high temperatures. Some factors contributing to EFA deficiency include: Fast food, low-fat, or low egg diets Taking aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs Taking cortisone, prednisone or other steroids Drinking hard liquor on a regular basis Regularly using margarine and refined sugars Smoking or chewing tobacco. One of my favorite references for learning about fats is: Smart Fats. How dietary fats and oils affect mental, physical and emotional intelligence. By Michael A Schmidt. A Natural Herbal Remedy Could Be Your Answer

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Joe_Rote] Joe Rote Natural herbal remedies are drawing the attention of many traditional medical practitioners to rapidly recognize the ability of the hundreds of thousands of known herbs that have the ability to treat and prevent various human and animal illnesses, as well as properties that can enhance mental attitude, appearance, and performance. Many centuries of experimentation by many cultures, for example Indian herbal medicine(Ayurvedic), Chinese herbal medicine, and western herbal medicine have created many uses for plants either singularly or in compounds, and sometimes animal by products to prevent and treat various conditions and illnesses. A natural remedy can be anything from tea, to complex preparations of herbal compounds used in hospitals and clinics. These formulas come in many forms such as capsules, pills, ointments, and gels. You may be using some of the common herbs as a food in your home such as: * Garlic–natural antibiotic and helps reduce cholesterol * Cinnamon–lowers blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglycerides * Ginger–prevents motion sickness and lowers risk of blood clots * Chamomile Tea–calms nerves and help relieve digestive problems * Peppermint–Treats many digestion and gastrointestinal problems These common herbs may be mixed with other proven natural products to achieve a particular result. Traditional medicine is very useful for diagnosis, emergencies, trauma and surgery, but often does not cut it for preventing disease from occurring. The time and wait needed to visit a doctor to get a prescription, and the ever growing cost of medicine is allowing an opportunity for many people to try to get help from natural products. Many traditional medicines are showing many adverse side effects. Natural, is not necessarily safe, and may have unwanted side effects just as with conventional medicines, however a large ever growing number of the population has been using herbals, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids for many years with very favorable results and no adverse effects. Natural herbal products are now available for use by adults, children, and pets to remedy countless conditions from Angina and Arthritis, to skin care remedies, thyroid treatment, urinary tract infection and an unlimited number of other disorders. Many new products have been compounded to remedy conditions other then disease, such as smoking cessation, removing unwanted hair, eliminating wrinkles and many other conditions. Summer Camp for Any Age

By Eriani Doyel Whether your child is still in preschool, or if they are in their high school years, you can find a summer camp which will fit their needs and provide them with a summer filled with good memories. If you went to summer camp as a child, you may or may not have fond memories of your time there. But you will find that today, there are many more camp choices for your children-not only with the activities that the summer camp offers, but also the length and age of the participants. The first thing that you should really think about when choosing a camp for your child is the age and maturity level of your child. Most children that are younger than 9 years old are not old enough for a sleep-away camp yet. They may be able to handle one or two nights away, but longer than that could be difficult. After age nine, the summer camp length can gradually increase to anywhere from a week to a few weeks. In order to prepare your child for their first experience sleeping away from home at summer camp, you may want to have them spend a night or two with a close friend or relative. The next thing that you will need to decide is what type of camp. You may be in an area which offers a summer camp program through the city and school district which offer a wide selection of activities. You may also be able to find music, drama, sports, or computer camps that are only day camps. A sleep away camp may have a focus on anything from horsemanship, to surfboarding, to weight loss. You can find a lot of information about different camps by looking on the internet. Before your child attends any camp you will need to do some very intensive questioning and research. You should find out what a daily schedule looks like, how free time is spent, what the menu is, and what the ratio of staff to campers is. You will also need to find out what kind of medical training and facilities the camp offers and what the emergency notification procedures are. Ask how you will be able to contact your child. You may even want to find someone who has had a child at that particular camp and ask them questions. Give your child a lifetime of memories from camp. Adult Dating

By Yair Czitrom Today’s cyber world has change the way we date. In the old days, we met our partners on a blind date, via some friends, at a party or alike. Now days, we have the online dating. As the world became more and more “open minded”, people have the opportunity the find what they were always fantasizing right here, on the internet. Up until now, if you felt “naughty” and wanted to have a flirt/one night stand/discreet relationship etc, you needed to go out and find it or to look in the old style classified. Now days, you can find it all on the internet. The biggest problem is to find the right site, as most of them are some kind of adult site that shows photos/movies and the others are kind of “hardcore” sites. If you are looking for a site that will give you the opportunity to find that “open minded” parent, you will find it more difficult, and you will probably going to search a lot on the search engines to find a site that is more “soft core” but still target your kind of search. What is the difference between adult dating sites and normal dating sites? Well, liberated dating sites target people that are more interested in casual sex or casual relationships. Whereas most online daters are looking for something more than just a casual fling. One of these kinds of sites is www.onenightstanddate.com It is a new fresh open-minded down to earth site with exactly the kind of “soft core” style, which puts you in the right mood but not over doing it. OneNightStandDate.com offers the latest features of the online dating service, which helps you communicate is many different ways in order to find your partner and still have some fun while you search: ShoutBoxPrivate photo gallery Private BLOG Top-rated profiles lookup Zodiac signs lookup in profiles and search results Password-protected members photos Messenger with storing system Advanced control panel for members (profile status and all-contacts information) Media (video and audio messages for profiles) Configurable Flash-based online live-chat system Instant messenger with photos and history Advanced search - Search for online members, searching members, communicating (in IM) members… USA states and ZIP codes search options Matchmaking (auto search based on user-specified criteria) Cupid mail (matchmaking results auto-sending What is greater about it is that this site is free. Day Spas: Pampering Without the Time Commitment

By Ian W Anderson There is no doubt about it; we live in a hectic society that does not show any signs of slowing pace any time soon. To relive some of the stress associated with always being on the go, many people have turned to spas to help them melt away the worries of the world. But what if you dont have thousands of dollars and a full week to devote to becoming one with yourself and nature? The answer could be as simple as day spas. Day spas are a relatively new phenomenon. In the early 80s, there were only a handful of day spas scattered across the United States. In those days, if you wanted spa luxury, you had to foot the bill and make the time commitment. As you can imagine, this severely limited the spa customer base to the privileged. Today, there are thousands of day spas, and you can find one in almost every community. Day spas are different from their luxury spa counterparts in that customers have the option of visiting for an entire day, a half day or just an hour or two. There are no overnight stays and no week-long package commitments. In a day spa, you can get premium services just like those found in the traditional spas, but for a lot less time and money. So, what types of services can you get in a day spa? Virtually everything from facials, massage, body wraps, sunless tanning, pedicures, manicures, electrolysis, hair services, make-up applications, hair color, lunch… you name it. Heres a brief look at some popular day spa packages: * $125 to $175 will get you three-hour classic salon/spa experience including manicure with paraffin treatment, pedicure, scalp treatment, shampoo and styling, massage or mini-facial. * $75 to $100 will get you a two-hour body treatment with exfoliation, massage and steam bath * For $300 to $500, you can get pampered for the whole day and choose from a host of services. You will also be served meals during your day-long stay. And dont think that day spas skimp on luxury. Many spas offer limousine services and treat their clients like they are royalty no matter what walk of life they come from. For this reason, day spa gift certificates have become extremely popular gifts. When you give a day spa gift certificate, you are giving a luxurious gift of indulgence to your loved one. What better way is there to say that theyve worked hard and deserve a little bit of the finer things in life? When choosing a day spa, keep in mind that different spas offer different services. In many cases, day spas are ran in conjunction with a full-service beauty salon. That means that you can choose from a wide variety of services. Other day spas, though, may only offer massage and skin-care services without offering hair and nail services. You should also shop around. Prices from spa to spa can vary considerably. So, if you want to be pampered but have little money and even less time, perhaps a day spa is the perfect compromise that youve been looking for. But be forewarned, day spas can be addictive. Classic Toys = Classic Fun

By Robert Benson It seems nowadays children are preoccupied with either television or video games. But it wasn’t that long ago when children had to use their ingenuity and imaginations to be entertained when playing and having fun. Parents can bring back this ideology back into our homes by turning off those dreaded machines, getting back to the basics and bringing into our homes the classic toys that have entertained and educated children for decades. With the advent of the “video age”, there is no doubt toy companies feel slighted on the bottom line. But some toys stand the test of time and never go out of style, still entertaining and thrilling children for decades, with no let up in sight. Let’s explore some of these classic toys and icons of the toy industry: Etch a Sketch Invented in the late 1950’s by a gentleman named Arthur Granjean (he called it “L Ecran Magique”), meaning the magic screen; in his garage. The Ohio Art Company decided to take a chance on his “drawing toy” and renamed it the Etch A Sketch and in 1960 launched a successful television advertisement campaign to promote it. The response was so overwhelming, Ohio Art continued to produce them until noon Christmas Eve, 1960. The toys were then immediately shipped to the west coast so people there could have the Etch A Sketch in time for Christmas. The Etch A Sketch has entertained over 100 million adults and children in 67 countries worldwide. The basic design pretty much stayed the same, although Ohio Art did offer hot pink and blue frames in the 1970’s, but found that people preferred the traditional red frame. Additionally, the Etch A Sketch Club was formed in 1978 and has an average of 2,000 members worldwide. For fun, take a poll of your friends or coworkers, and ask them how many of them ever drew something with an Etch A Sketch. Your numbers will be astonishing; it was and still is, one of the world’s most popular toys! The Erector Set A. C. Gilbert was a brilliant man. At the time of his death in 1962, he was credited with 150 patents for the inventions that went into his products. In fact, as a boy he was a talented magician and it was that talent that helped him pay his tuition to Yale Medical School. While going to school and performing as a magician, he formed Mysto Manufacturing, a company that sold magic kits to children. Gilbert ultimately finished Yale Medical School, but decided to enter the toy business rather than practice medicine. He was a gifted inventor and chose to entertain and educate children. His most popular invention? The vintage construction toy-the erector set. In 1911, on one of his many train trips from New Haven (his home) to New York City, he watched out the window as workers positioned and riveted the steel beams of an electrical power line tower. He decided to create a children’s construction kit, with evenly spaced holes for bolts to pass through and he included nuts, pulleys, gears and eventually engines. Although a British company called Meccano was selling a similar toy, Gilbert thought his “erector set” would be more realistic. His set had more technical advantages, especially steel beams that were not flat, but were bent lengthwise to produce a ninety degree angle, thus, four of them joined together side-to-side, formed a sturdy, square support beam. Backed by the first major American advertising campaign for a toy, Gilbert started selling the “Mysto Erector Structural Steel Builder” in 1913, (later to be called, simply the “erector set”) and the toy became one of the most popular construction toys of all time. It was not unusual for living rooms across the country to be crowded with small skyscrapers and buildings that young minds had carefully crafted. It is estimated that the A. C. Gilbert Company has sold more than 30 million sets. In 1943, a Naval engineer accidentally knocked some springs off of a shelf while he was working on a meter designed to monitor horsepower on battleships. He marveled at the way they “walked” instead of falling and the odd movement of these springs gave Richard James an idea and an instant toy was born. That toy: The Slinky Richard James then spent the next two years testing and refining the best steel gauge and coil to utilize for his new toy. His wife, Betty appropriately found the perfect name for this new toy- a Slinky; which is the Swedish word meaning traespiral or sleek. The couple borrowed five hundred dollars and James designed a machine to coil eighty feet of wire into a two-inch spiral and manufacture their new toy. Sales were slow at first, but soared after the Slinky was demonstrated at Gimbel’s Department Store in Philadelphia for the Christmas season in 1945. The first 400 sold within the ninety-minute demonstration and a new fad had begun. Around 1960, Richard James suffered what some called a mid-life crisis and left his wife, their six children and joined a Bolivian religious cult. He also deserted the Slinky toy he worked so hard to produce and left the company in debt and ruin. Betty James took over as CEO of James Industries and introduced other toys for the “Slinky line-up” including: Slinky pets, crazy eyes Slinky (glasses with Slinky-extended fake eyeballs), neon Slinky, and also replaced the original black-blue Swedish steel with American steel. Additionally she moved the company headquarters from Philadelphia to Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania and began an aggressive advertising campaign, complete with the now famous Slinky jingle: “What walks down stairs, alone in pairs, And makes a Slinkity sound? A spring, a spring, a marvelous thing, Everyone knows it’s Slinky It’s Slinky, it’s Slinky, for fun it’s a wonderful toy It’s Slinky, it’s Slinky, it’s fun for a girl or a boy” However, the Slinky is not just an entertaining toy for children. It is used in schools in physics classes to demonstrate wave properties, forces, and energy states. The Slinky still continues to sell (250 million have been sold to date) and are still manufactured in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania using the original equipment designed by Richard James. We have looked at the history of three classic toys that continue to entertain children all over the world. There is one clear concept that be derived: Classic toys equal classic fun. Robert Benson has written articles on many subjects and operates two web sites. Such a Disgrace!

By Vipin Agnihotri It is indeed a disgrace to correlate conflicts with religion. Does Islam summon Muslims in Palestine to kill Israelis and themselves in suicidal attacks? Does Hinduism preach kidnap and kill those who are against Hinduism? To most Indians and I am sure Pakistanis as well as also to most people of other religion will more than agree that such practices are wrong and must be condemned. Religions do not contain inherent “conflict-genes”, making unsolvable conflicts an inevitable outcome of their co-existence. Conflicts involving religion are always the result of misperceptions in our minds. Western political elites especially are applying an approach, portraying Islam as the root cause of terror. This is dangerous. It threatens to demonize followers of a specific religion thereby running the risk of producing endless counter-demonizations adding to a security dilemma of Cold War type where every step taken by one part is perceived as a threat by the other who then has to retaliate Essentially, the approach is also an assault on the religion Islam itself. It implies that all Muslims are extremists, which is as inaccurate as saying that the ultra rightwing moral majority in USA fairly represents Christianity. One of many shortcomings in the world of today is judging Islam by the conduct of a minority of its people. If a religion is to be judged on its role in conflict this should logically be done on the basis of its sources, not on the basis of extreme acts of a tiny minority of its self-proclaimed followers. In the case of Islam the sources are the Quran and Sunna (teachings of prophet Muhammad), e.g.: “Allah commands justice and doing good and giving to relatives. And He forbids indecency and doing wrong and tyranny. He warns you so that hopefully you will pay heed” (Quran, 16:90). Even though religions are essentially about building peace, they are unfortunately sometimes misinterpreted and misused. When this happens it is a result of constructions of the mind about religion and about “the other”. In the current global conflict between religious fundamentalists and secularists, for instance, each party perceives and talks about the other as posing threats to their societal orders and ways of living. When secularists preach secular state, pluralism, and abolishment of Sharia-laws, fundamentalists perceive it as attacks on Islam. Secularists on the other hand perceive religious fundamentalism as an existential threat to their societies and ways of life. They almost regard the secular society as something holy. What were once open societies have become xenophobic entities. Many religious leaders have expressed the need for harmony and unity in the fight against terror. Ironically, the biggest obstacle seems to be the political leaders who are fully occupied with demonizing “axiss of evil” and “opponents of freedom”. There is need for clarification of religion and its relationship to conflict. Firstly, it must be appreciated that it is not religion as such but specific fundamentalist constructions of religion that produces conflict. Secondly, religious fundamentalism itself tends to transform religion into ideology. This is an assault on religion that can only be done well through re-mystification. Religious conflicts are a product of misperception in our minds. Let us not create another cold war conflict based on them. No religion legitimizes conflict! His Excellency, Mohamed Khatami, Presedent of Iran, once complained in an inter-religious forum: “Dialogue amongst civilizations, particularly dialogue between Islam and Christianity is vital, essential and inevitable. Today, people speak of the global village. However, the problem is that residents of this global village are unable to understand each other. Isnt it catastrophic that people of this village are deaf and dumb and worse than that, they have hostile thoughts toward each other”.
